Both headlines are old. One far more so than the other, but both are rather amusing and come from short pieces found on TimesOnline.

The first is as follows:
Coming soon - Kosher Tequila

This piece talks about the unveiling of a new tequila that will be made according to kosheric law and, according to the piece, should already be available for purchase.

The second headline:
Airline sacrifices goats to solve technical faults

Apparently, in 2007, a Nepalese airline sacrificed two goats on the runway to garner the favor of the Hindu sky deity, named Akash Bhairav. The airline felt that this was the best way to handle the technical difficulties one of their jets had been having.

In Case the Log Cabin Republicans Weren't Being Taken Seriously

So, apparently, the Log Cabin Republicans were becoming far too liberal and alienated form conservative values. So, a few members went on to create GOProud. No, seriously. This is according to an article on gay.com, the same website that posted the ad for their paid membership, of which I have posted a picture of on an earlier post.

According to GOProud.org, the group, "is committed to a traditional conservative agenda that emphasizes limited government, individual liberty, free markets and a confident foreign policy."

If they are in fact, committed to these prinicipals, I say go them. However, if this is a gay neo-conservative think thank, I'm already getting ready for my trademarked eye roll. What concerns me more than that, though, is the next line on the homepage,

"GOProud promotes our traditional conservative agenda by influencing
politics and policy at the federal level."

I don't think that they understand the vastly small amount of influence that they seemed to have while they were part of the LCR. I can understand that they want a voice, but joining in with the very people who want nothing to do with you seems... shall we say odd? Even more odd is then leaving said group because you want to be even more like the people who want nothing to do with you. I must admit, and perhaps because I am just one of those dirty liberals, I am utterly perplexed.

A Little Late, but About This Whole 420

So, it is a little late, but I did find this article on the Huffington Post that finally explains where the code "420" come from. Most people identify this code with stoners, that is people who smoke cannabis. Most people though, including the stoners themselves, have no idea where it comes from. It is simply taken for granted as part of the subculture. When perusing though, I found an article where someone took the time to do the research and found the root of it all with some random teenagers, in California in the early 70's and their fateful influence on none other than the Grateful Dead. Accurate Advertising

So, the National Organization for Marriage (For Special People And No One Else), or the NOM(FSPANOE) created an ad attempting to inform the modern American on the dangers of same-sex marriage by showing how real Americans suffer from those relentless homos. So, they hired actors. I do not feel like giving that ad the space on my blog and so have not included it here. If you wish to view it, and most likely be pissed off, you may click here. However, there was another video created, and I, for one, laud their more accurate advertising for this same organization.

One of the many types of comments that has earned a Hardy Eye-RollTM from me, ever since the fateful loss of the White House by Republicans this past election, is that many on the Left now seem to almost adore President Obama. Comments indicating that retail displays of his books and books about him are "shrines" to him are not uncommon. This is not to say that some of these comments do not come from a sore losing with many on the political right admitting freely that the very soul of the Republican party is up for a new definition, and for grabs, for that matter. Still, I can't help but notice that part of the coverage that he gets is a bit more positive in the media.
Is this due perhaps to his relative youthfulness? While past presidents have often engaged in sports, many of those sports are golf, horseback riding, and the like. These sports certainly require a good deal of skill, but neither of them are quite as rigorous as basketball, which President Obama still makes time to play despite his new schedule. Perhaps this has helped him maintain his appearance? I am fairly young, but I cannot recall any president before him being pictured shirtless on the cover of a magazine as I have seen of President Obama. In fact, the last time the nation seemed to be this excited about a president whom they felt showed a youthful exhuberance was President Kennedy.
There are also many women, and a few men, who cannot help but remark to me that, all politics aside, they do find him attractive. I noticed this trend for some time and said nothing, until I noticed an ad for a popular gay dating web site pushing for unpaid members to purchase a paid membership.

The ad shows an African American gentleman who bears a younger, but very real resemblance to the current president. They even go so far as to refer to their paid membership as a "stimulus package" referencing not only the president's economic agenda, but presumably also to the steamy dates one is supposed to acquire via said paid membership.

I do not believe that this is the only reason that people voted for Mr. Obama for the office of President, but after hearing comments from many people who admire men, and the aforementioned ad, I cannot discount the possibility that this has played a role. I do not know precisely what to say about the subject. All I know is that all I could think to myself when I saw this ad was, "I knew I wasn't the only one."

There was an article released on the Huffington Post recently concerning the number of American soldiers lost in Iraq. By lost of course, we mean deceased. What seemed most startling, and disturbing, is that most Americans are not aware of how large the number is any more. I was shocked myself to see how large it had gotten. We seemed to have stopped paying attention, or at least our media did, due to the upcoming election. I think another large portion of it though, is due to the fact that we as a nation are sadly, and frighteningly, apathetic. Just in case everyone was wondering, the number is now at about 4,000.

Spitzer and His Girls

So apparently, Gov. Spitzer is stepping down amid the prostitution scandal he finds himself wrapped in. There are several things that make my eyebrows raise a little when I read about this situation. For one, am I the only one who finds it odd that the Republicans and Christian leaders are caught with boys and the Democrats are caught with women? Shouldn't it be those "God damned liberals" who keep getting caught with boys? Apparently, this is not the way the world works. Behold, your politicians have lied to you. (What else is new?) All I can say is at least his women were of age and not giving blow jobs by hand signal in the men's room.

Apparently, Spitzer spent over $80,000 on prostitutes in the past ten years, loved mood music, and according to one prostitute, was "clean"... whatever the hell that means. He's in all kinds of trouble now because some of the money he used may have been state money. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, he really is that smart. Oh, straight people! They make me laugh.

Naturally, people who knew the Spitzers are shocked. Jim Cramer, the man most likely to have a cardiac arrest on national television, got teary eyed when asked about his friend, according to one headline on Huffington Post. This type of situation also calls for, of course, the timeless wisdom of our elders and charlatans, like Dr. Laura.

According to that shining beacon of morality, men cheat on their wives, not because they have a mind and penis of their own, but because something is missing from the marriage that the wife simply did not provide. And who can argue with Dr. Laura? No one, because she'll hang up on you and pretend she's right. It's true. Listen to her show. You'll see.

Beware the American Girls!

According to a recent study by the CDC, the rates of STD's in young American girls is approximately one in every four. This is shocking, and something needs to be done. This is all very true. What made the whole story just a little bit more enlightening is when you read the headline off of BBC International News.

This is hysterical at first, until you realize that if foreigners read this and listen to our President, then surely they think we are imbeciles. I just thought I'd offer that.

Concerning Things Which Will Not Die

Jacqui Woods, the archaeologist who helped advise in 1991 on the excavation of the Iceman, has had her most recent work highlighted in a British newspaper. The article details sites being excavated in Cornwall, which show evidence of Pagan rituals. What makes this article so interesting is that, while any site that shows evidence of Pagan rituals in the UK is a real find, this site, and it's evidence, only date back to the mid-seventeenth century. This is well after the fairly early conversion to Christianity throughout the British Isles.

The sites are described as pits containing the remnants of birds, eggs, swan pelts, stones, fabric, and more. Woods hints that the offerings may have been fertility symbols connected to conception and pregnancy. Some of the pits were also wells at one time that seem to have been sealed up by Puritans at some point. All of this becomes particularly interesting when we remember that this is at the height of the witch hunts in England and most of Western Europe.

The archaeologist was also quoted with something in the article that, quite frankly surprised me,

"Often when secret rituals are abandoned people will talk about ‘things that were done in my grandmother’s day’ but there has been no whisper of this. It really makes me wonder whether that is because it is still going on."

This juicy little piece really makes you wonder how long things like this have gone on, or if they're still going on. This, I think would surprise most Americans since they view Britain as staunch, and sometimes, boring.

Where to begin? Imagine that you go out with friends. Imagine that all is well, you're all having a good time, and you're glad that this night has come, and its relaxing. Imagine that you drink a bit, and feel nothing. Imagine that you drink some more and still feel nothing. You have one more round, only to get a very slight buzz. Finally, you say, "I'm just gonna have one more round." You have your round and finally, it all hits you at once. Blackout. Imagine waking up the next morning to find that you may have lost your best friend, ruined a chance for his future love life, and owe him a new phone. What makes this worse? You don't remember any of it. Nothing. Not a scratch. You don't have patchy memories of things going wrong. You remember NOTHING.

This, dear readers, is where I find myself. Apparently, I said some horrible things. From what I understand, they were maybe worse than horrible. I don't know what I said. I don't know where to start to fix something like this, or if it's even possible. I turned on someone who has had my back for a good long while. I don't know what I was thinking, or how to retrace my steps because the liquor stole those clues from me. I guess I should say I gave them freely.

I'm writing this for two reasons. First of all, I'm hoping that this person reads this, and knows how truly sorry I am. He has had my back for a very long time. He has sat with me through some of my lowest points. Aside from my father, he may be the only man to have seen me cry in my adult life, that I am aware of. He has put up with a whole lot of bullshit from me, and apart from all of this, we have had a great time together. I care about him deeply, and if he never wants to talk with, or see me again... I understand. I just want him to know that I do care what happens to him, and I am sorry for being an utter asshole.

Secondly, I am writing this to confirm his thoughts. I do not need to drink for a good, long while. I have found myself drinking often. Too often. I do need to stop. It has become a problem in my life. It has cost me my grounding, my confidence, and maybe now, my best friend. I will not be drinking again for a long time, maybe forever, and I hope everyone respects that.

So if you're a big Harry Potter nerd, like myself, you'll love this! Apparently there are quidditch teams forming at colleges all over the country. The game is actually played running with a broomstick between your legs and the quaffle is a volleyball!! From what I understand the snitch is hidden somewhere on campus and the two seekers are sent to run all over campus to find it. The really awesome part about this? A student at Bucknell University was actually even given funding to start their university's quidditch team!! And you may be asking yourself exactly how lame I am.... Ask no longer! Interesting News Item

I found this video clip on ABC News and it caught my eye. What happened was that two men were kidnapped, rather randomly, outside of a nightclub. When they were put into the trunk of a car one of the men had the idea to send a text message asking for help. As a result the two men were rescued. This, in and of itself, was really amazing quite frankly. What really got my attention though was that if you look at the image of the nightclub shown in the video and watch carefully as the camera pans, you see a rainbow flag... So my immediate question is, did the kidnappers know it was a gay nightclub? Many times I have heard of thieves and so forth going into the gay disctrict of a city because they identify gay men as stereotypically rich and defenseless. I know someone who nearly had such an experience in one gayborhood. I wonder if this was the case in this scenario. This is all assuming of course, that the two men are in fact gay. Just a thought.

This is the boy, Matthew Shepard. On October 7, 1998 Aaron McKinney and Russell
Henderson lead him to a remote area east of Laramie where they demonstrated unimaginable acts of hate. Matthew was tied to a split-rail fence where he was
beaten and left to die in the cold of the night. Almost 18 hours later he was
found by a cyclist who initially mistook him for a scarecrow. Matthew died on
October 12 at 12:53 am at a hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado. KILLED BECAUSE
HE WAS GAY!!!

So I know I haven't posted on to this thing in quite some time. It's been almost two months in fact, but here we go again. William Sledd, who I believe is a fashion designer, decided to make a Pride video for the month of June and asked people to put in video responses. Now, when you first see the video put out by William and the videos put out by so many gay young people its easy for anyone who's been in the community for a while to brush it off as overdramatic or immature, etc. etc. But I have to admit, its pretty impressive when you realize just how young some of these kids are and how much gall they had to come up with just to say that they're gay much less put in on the web. Edwards: Jesus Would Be 'Appalled'

Senator Edwards had an interview with BeliefNet concerning his views on religion apparently. According to the article, he stated the following:

"I think that Jesus would be disappointed in our ignoring the plight of those around us who are suffering and our focus on our own selfish short-term needs," Edwards told the site. "I think he would be appalled, actually."

Quite frankly, I don't think it could have been said any better. I can't stand the way that Christianity, for all of its traditions and purity of intent, has been twisted and used in such way that cause such suffering in the world. Last year when a new leader went to Haggert's old post in a conservative Christian organization and decided that the direction that they should be taking was to help the poor and the sick, they told him quite frankly, that they did not think that that was what their organization should be doing. They instead wanted to focus on politics...

New priest for old faith

This news item was interesting to me only because Zaroastrianism is an extremely old religion, which actually claims to be the first monotheistic one. It has dwindled in numbers greatly in the recent past, and when the article describes it as fragile, they're not joking. What is also interesting is that this article comes to us from Colorado, which is the very last place I would have gone looking for followers of Zaroastrianism. Just thought it was an interesting tidbit, and rather beautiful that there are people willing to dedicate themselves to make sure that their old traditions stay intact.

Evangelists divide Huichol communities, cause conflict

This particular story is very interesting because it is a perfect example of why I don't care for missionaries in foreign countries. For one, Western missionaries often know nothing, and care nothing, for the preservation of traditional cultures. For two, they often are not interested with helping native people maintain their land rights, or fighting discrimination or persecution. One member of the Huichol in the article had this to say:

''The government follows a strategy by which it divides the pueblos. The government wants their land, ultimately. And the evangelists are in inroad into community control.''

When you look at missionaries who go all over the world, you often find that this is the outcome of their work. Whether or not they intend for this to happen as a result of their efforts to convert people, it is clear by their continued efforts that they simply don't care. What's more is that I am a supporter for the free exchange of ideas, but when the people as a community ask the people from the outside to leave, they should leave. Instead the missionaries in this scenario dropped radios by plane which were already tuned to an evangelist sermon. To be quite honest, it's a rather disgusting course of action. If the Huichol had gone to a private evangelist school to disseminate their religion, they most likely would have been asked to leave. They probably would've left and most likely would not have decided to sneak things in. Why? Because it's disrespectful of the wishes of the people. If only the missionaries would grant this same amount of courtesy...

This has been something that has actually been brewing for quite some time. The first time I heard about this was two or three years ago in the Advocate. They had an article running about gay hip hop and a few artists. This news item features an openly gay hip hop artist named Dead Lee. What's interesting is to see how this has become more and more pervasive and how and why these artists have decided to come out. What's even more interesting is that you still can't find any of their music anywhere, not even on Amazon. This particular artist though, also takes an interesting stance on the f-word (It used to be avoided altogether on television, but the media lately has equated it with the n-word). His stance is to reclaim the f-word, the same way that African Americans have reclaimed the n-word in early rap and hip hop. I like the idea of reclaiming words, and the gay community already did that with the word queer, but for the most part, we've stayed away from the f-word because it is simply so harsh. It will be interesting to see if this becomes a trend...

Gunman kills 5 at Utah mall, police say

This took place in Salt Lake City, in a rather popular mall. The victims ranged in age from 15 to 52. Two of the victims were male and two were female. There were also four injured. Apparently, the shooter was only 18 years old, and according to one mall employee, looked rather calm through the whole ordeal. He was well armed, and guess what he was wearing? A trenchcoat. After Columbine, that seems to be the garment of choice for shooters for some reason. I really don't know what to say about this young man. Not so much younger than me even. I really don't know what would possess a person to go to such extremes.

I guess what also makes it so scary is that it took place in a mall. There have been incidences like this before, and each time they scare me because malls in general are open to the public. I have to admit that things like this scare the hell out of me, and that from time to time in a mall, I do look around to see if anyone looks like they mean harm. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I don't think so.

Viagra goes OTC in United Kingdom

I just thought this was hilarious! Apparently, Viagra will now be available OTC in the UK! And just in time for Valentines!! The article does say that the patient must still talk to the pharmacist and have small tests taken, such as for glucose, blood pressure, etc. I only hope that safety does not become an issue in this situation. Viagra can have some pretty nasty side effects with the right, or wrong, heart conditions.

What I don't get is that, the drug company probably did this because of the number of men too embarassed to talk to their doctors. However, if I needed Viagra, I would be far less likely to go get a bunch of small tests done in the middle of a drug store to get the Viagra over the counter. I don't know. It's nothing I've ever had to deal with, so maybe it really is less embarassing this way...

Even husband-in-chief forgets Valentine's Day

In this article Laura Bush basically admits that Georgie forgets Valentine's and, in general, is a goof about the whole day. I don't honestly know how the woman can stay married to the man. But then, who knows? Maybe it really is worth it.... LOL!! I know... that was just for us.

In all honesty, it really is hard for me to wish ill upon anyone. I hope they do enjoy themselves and that there really is love between them. I just wish Mrs. Bush could convince him to fix the damn country.

'Miracle' -- teen's heart, stopped for 4 days, beats again

This story is incredible to me because a teenage boy collapsed in his PE class because of a congenial heart failure. His heart had stopped beating completely. He was put on a machine and put on the heart transplant waiting list. Four days later, his heart simply started beating again. One thing that the news always seems to do is call everything good that happens a miracle. It only bothers me when they do it for something that goes good in a normal way, because it makes people believe that good things never happen. But this really does sound, in its best description, like a miracle.

Size zero: The boys

As if our country needed any more unhealthy idols to admire, there has been a trend in the fashion world trying to find male models who are pencil thin. The look they're trying to achieve is more androgynous look. Seriously. I'm not sure why this trend has taken hold, but alas it has. What is even more unfortunate is that it is starting to take the same road that this has led to for female models. Anorexia and bulimia are now starting to become more common in male models throughout the industry.

I never did understand the obsession with dangerously thin people. In my mind, they're just not very attractive. There is nothing about being that unhealthy that looks glamorous to me, or makes me want to look like that. Although, I must admit, I do feel self-conscious when I see guys on magazine covers who also have muscled bodies, so I guess this isn't anything terribly new for men. Gods know it's nothing new for women...

Country radio still cold to Dixie Chicks

So am I the only one who's tired of hearing about this bullshit?!?!? Seriously folks, they said what we now ALL know to be true. Before only a handfull of us seemed to know it with some skeptics and a whole lot of people who had an inkling, but now we ALL know it!! Some conservatives accused the Grammy's of being "out of touch" with the American people. I say look who's calling the kettle black! The Grammy's are not in place to praise our political system or the people in it. The awards show is there to award good music and good music artists.

The Billboard country music correspondent had this to say, "If you're trying to offer an olive branch to country radio, that's not the way to do it," said Ken Tucker, "The Chicks are celebrating being the outlaws."

The fact that the man is surprised seems so rediculous to me. Most of what country music culture is today is a celebration of being outside the mainstream and "redneck". If you take people who disagree with you, but come from that same line of thinking, then guess what? That means you're not the rebels anymore, redneck. You're the one lagging behind!

Anna Nicole Smith Dead at Age 39

This struck me as quite a surprise. Now, I never cared for the woman when she was alive. I will be the first to admit it. I have to admit though that I am very sad that she's dead. A lot of people will try to write her off as a drunk, or a druggy. And while she did enjoy her partying, and while I did get tired of hearing about her, I again am surprised at how sad I am that she actually died.

When someone told me today that she was dead, I had to sit down for just a second. Part of that, I know, is guilt for talking so badly about someone who died rather tragically six months after giving birth and the death of her son. Part of it also though, is the fact that she was kind of like one of those crazy relatives who just drives you mad. At the same time, you don't want them to die. She did always seem incredibly unhappy underneath it all. I hope she finds some peace out there...

A witches' brew of religious discrimination

This one issue has been in the news off and on again for a number of years now. The issue revolves around the United States Army and Wiccan service members. For years now, the Office of Veterans' Affairs has refused to give Wiccan soldiers the right to have a pentacle put on their tombstones. This issue is actually almost a decade old, and still almost nothing has come of it. Veterans' Affairs has continually come up with excuse after excuse, and now the hold up seems to be only the waiting period which has been several years. The widow of one Patrick Stewart, who was killed when his helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan, has been fighting to no end to get their religion recognized on his tombstone. It is a sad day in America when we can not treat our fallen soldiers with the respect they deserve after they gave their very lives for our country.

Police: Mom gave teen son a gun to take revenge

Yes folks, you read that headline right. Apparently, the son lost a fight at school. The mother decided that the son should take revenge upon the boy he lost the fight to. The boy who won the fight suffered several gunshot wounds to his torso and died shortly thereafter in a trauma center. I don't understand what kind of sick bitch would encourage her child to kill someone else's. As an anthropologist, I have my own serious question about "mother's instinct." But the way I was raised tells me flat out that a mother who seriously loved her child could not fathom putting another mother through that hell. I hope they charge that stupid bitch with everything they can find.

This article is interesting only because it seems to back up so much of the argument against the anti-immigration rhetoric. For so long, those who support things like a huge wall barricading the southern border, hunting human beings with rifles, and creating an official language have stated time and time again that racism is not a part of their reasoning. However, they never seem to offer any examples of this. They're not racist, simply because they said so, despite the overwhelming evidence to the opposite conclusion. Here is just such a piece of evidence. Don't they get it yet? We know why they oppose immigration so much. They're not fooling anyone.

Huge global child porn ring found

What can I say? I hope they catch these horrible people. What really seems to amaze me is not that there are child predators, but that there are so many! It really is rather disgusting. I'm just shocked that there seems to be a plague of them everywhere. What's even more shocking that this article shows, but doesn't seem to want to acknowledge, is that the country with the most suspects in the child porn ring are from America. Does that creep anyone else out?

Haggard now "completely heterosexual"

Apparently, the man who was outed by his gay escort found that he can be changed. The three ministers who were counceling him announced on Tuesday that the therapy had indeed worked. The interesting thing is that the counceling ministers also suggested that he goes into secular work. This does not come as a surprise since he severely damaged the church for which he served as pastor, not to mention the huge Evangelical organization of which he was head. If anyone remembers Jimmy Swaggert, it does make me wonder if, or when, we'll hear of more interesting news concerning Ted Haggard.

I never know what to make of people who find themselves in this situation. On one hand, I feel as though they have made a conscious effort to betray gay people everywhere in the way that they attempt to dehumanize glbt people, yet act on their own sexuality in a secret place somewhere. On the other hand, I wouldn't want to know the kind of self-loathing and weakness that makes a person become a closeted scandal waiting to happen. I suppose, in the end, all we can do is work for a better world for everyone and pray for people like Mr. Haggard.

I-957 would require married couples to have kids

I just thought that this was actually kind of funny. As many of us know, one of the largest arguments ever used to rationalize the discrimination of marriage rights to glbt people is that two people of the same sex can not procreate. Now, this is a scientific fact. Two people of the same sex can not procreate. However, the argument is always used against glbt people as if this were true of only them. Not all heterosexual couples can have children due to many issues. Many couples can have children, but simply choose not to. This proposal brought about in Washington state by a pro-marriage group, is meant to show exactly how ludicrous this argument is. They don't expect it to pass, and I sincerely hope it doesn't, but I do think it is rather effective. However, upon reading the article, it looks as though the opposing side still doesn't get it...

Everyone knows that I can't stand the stupid bitch pictured to the left, but let's take a look at my latest reason as to why (as if I needed any more). Apparently, someone filmed her while at a party, and she decided to use a few choice words. One of them begins with an "N" and another begins with an "F". Can you guess what words those were? They weren't nice and fun. That's for damn sure. She actually takes the time to rag on poor people too, which to me was the greatest little thing she could've ever done. I kinda want to slap her now, moreso than normally. We could also throw a match and I'm sure all of the cosmetic products she wears would also just combust... hopefully...

What is most disturbing about the whole thing is that she has actually asked for part of the proceeds if any come of the movie itself. She is actually that shallow to want to make money off of it as well.

Snickers Super Bowl Ad

Okay, so I ran across an article on a blog that takes a particularly offended view of the snickers ad that ran during the super bowl last night. I had originally refused to put a damn thing up about the super bowl, but now they've pissed me off. The ad can be viewed here. Now the ad itself is not entirely offensive. It can be indirectly linked to show how they are endorsing violence against gays, but for the most part, "it makes the mechanics out to be social neanderthals" as the blogger of Towleroad put it. I have to admit, I agree, the commercials alone are not that big a deal.

However, that's not what pissed me and these other bloggers off so much. When you open up the window that allows you to view the ad, there are the reactions to the commercial from the players on the opposing teams. They clearly show disgust to the scene where the two men kiss. John from DC on his AMERICAblog puts it rather succinctly, "These are role models for kids, and they're telling America's kids, and rather scary adults, that two guys kissing "ain't right.""

To exacerbate the situation a little further, we find that all this time Mars, which own snickers, m&m's and so forth is owned by a family of billionaires that actively supports the Republican party. They were also at the forefront of lobbying to repeal the estate tax. These don't sound like great people to me, but maybe I'm just overreacting... Or maybe I just won't eat any more of their chocolate. Who wants to boycott?! I do! I do!

Navajo Marine granted objector status

So, I know I often have several things to rant about when discussing how religion is treated as a way of judging people in America despite the fact that we're supposed to be "over" things like skin tone. However, I just wanted everyone to see that there is in fact, hope for the world. This article highlights how one Navajo man joined the Marines with full intention of serving in combat, only to find himself gifted with what the Navajo call the trembling hand. Apparently, it is seen as a spiritual gift that allows for healing and carries a long way in ancient traditions. The article goes on to say that when confronted with going to war which he is no longer allowed to do by custom because of his new gift, the Marines granted him objector status. I say yay Marines! Now, if only Wiccans can get their pentacle on their own grave, I think we'll be on our way to an even better world. Baby steps, baby steps...

Olympian Comeback!

So, unbeknownst to us Americans over here, Greece is one of the many countries left that does not allow for the freedom of religion. Greek Orthodox Christianity, Islam, and Judaism are the only three religions legally recognized by the Greek government... until recently. One religion that has made a comeback is the ancient Greek religion. This is clearly a reconstructionist movement, but it has proven to anger quite a few people within the Greek Orthodox Church. Apparently, they're not particularly happy about the revival. They usually show this by referring to the followers of said religion as, ""miserable resuscitators" of the degenerate dead religion" (The Guardian article). So far, the movement only seems to have a few followers, but they do seem rather loyal and they are petitioning to start using the ancient temple for what they were intended to be: temples. They do seem to have a bit of work ahead of them, but they are not without a sense of vision. Their official website has the following posted:

What is particularly interesting is that the Greek government is far more willing to let this happen, it seems, because of their entrance into the European Union which is made up of numerous other Western European countries with freedom of religion. So first on our list of news items is this:

Euless pushes judge to toss Santeria suit

This particular case is a little tricky. On one hand, you have the fact that for religious purposes, Santeria requires certain sacrifices at certain times. In this case, a goat must be slaughtered for an initiation. The city of Euless does not allow for the slaughtering of animals in the city limits for any purpose. This only gets tricky when we take into account that the law was not originally set up to target Santeria or its followers, but in fact was set up to keep farming out of the city. It will be interesting to see how this one plays out.

What does bother me about the fiasco is the way that news agencies have handled it. Only in certain print does it bother to mention that the sacrificed animal is eaten. When broadcasting, this simple fact is often overlooked.

Police: Man Attempts To Steal Gas Station ATM

Once again, modern man amazes us with his ingenuity. After all, what could be easier and simpler than stealing an entire atm?!!?!? Robbing the clerk? Mugging someone? Getting a job? Oh that was sill of me! Apparently this guy actually planned on hauling the entire damn thing into his truck. Apparently he didn't really think it through either... What's really inspiring about this entire story, is that this is only one of over a dozen attempts in the past month!

So I know that nearly everyone is going to disagree with me, but I think the movie Marie Antoinette looks startlingly interesting. I say "startlingly interesting" only because it strikes me that originally it did not look so interesting, even to me. However, I am, and always have been, fascinated with stories of famous and influential people, especially women, who have fallen from grace or found themselves otherwise "in over their heads" as they say. Marie Antoinette was no exception becoming a bride to a rather ill-equipped husband at the age of only fifteen, stripped away from all she knew. Her most famous quote was, as we all know, "Let them eat cake." However, she was a far more complex character than that quote alone would allow us to believe. In fact, when she first became Queen of France, she was hailed as the Queen of Compassion and rather beloved by the people of France.

What turned me off to the idea of the movie when I first saw print advertisement for it was the fact that it seemed to have an 80's flair to it. I immediately thought to myself that this was in terrible taste. But I watched the trailer online recently, and found that it was actually done very tastefully. What's more is that the official site for the movie actually has some real history listed, which raises my hopes that the movie had as much, if not more, research put into it. I also am usually not a fan of Kirsten Dunst, but she, again, startled me in the way she seems to portray this woman in the trailer.

Now, I know that the movie has already been released in theatres and in fact, is no longer showing there, but I am wanting to rent it when it comes out of DVD later this month. I say, at least take a look at the trailer.

this is something that is actually very near and dear to my heart, because i for one have not been a big fan of the faith based initiative since the very first time i ever saw it. i did not like the idea of having my tax dollars going to support religious groups where i have very little say in what the money goes to. secondly, i also do not like the idea because what i feared, and what has actually happened, was that the government would have its foot in to favor one religion or denomination over the other. such is the case with neopagan organizations who have not received any funds despite their work, and with the christian churches who rallied from the very beginning to sign a petition to make sure that that happened. i hope this case goes far.
